About JP Malan Concerts
JP Malan Concerts is an international classical music initiative founded and artistically directed by cellist Jacques-Pierre Malan. Based in the United States and internationally connected, the organization brings together distinguished musicians for chamber music performances, tours, recordings, educational projects, and artistic exchange.
Changing constellations of musicians, one project at a time.
Through collaborations between musicians from different countries and musical traditions, JP Malan Concerts seeks to create performances that are both artistically ambitious and deeply personal.
Its projects range from intimate chamber music concerts and recital collaborations to international tours, recording projects, masterclasses, and partnerships with presenters and cultural institutions.
Rather than operating as a single fixed ensemble, the organization creates changing constellations of musicians around individual projects — from string quartets and piano trios to recital partnerships, visiting artists, touring programmes and recordings.
Working with presenting partners, churches, museums, private hosts and cultural organizations, these projects bring quality chamber music into the spaces where communities gather — where classical music is most desired, appreciated and needed.
The Idea
of Exchange.
International exchange remains at the heart of JP Malan Concerts.
Each project creates an opportunity for musicians shaped by different countries, cultures and musical traditions to work closely together. Through rehearsal, performance, touring and conversation, they exchange artistic ideas and bring those encounters to audiences.
That exchange extends beyond the musicians themselves. Concerts become meeting places between visiting artists, local communities and audiences — allowing chamber music to become a form of cultural dialogue.
An idea
born on tour.
The idea behind JP Malan Concerts grew from cellist Jacques-Pierre Malan's experiences performing and collaborating across cultures.
A particularly formative experience was his concert tour of Japan. Performing within another cultural environment demonstrated how music could create immediate connections between musicians and audiences.
The experience strengthened an idea that would become central to the organization: international touring can be more than simply taking a concert from one country to another. It can create genuine artistic and cultural exchange.
Malan's work as Cellist-in-Residence and Co-Artistic Director of the Embassy Series in Washington, D.C. further shaped this vision. Working in an environment where music, diplomacy and international culture regularly intersect reinforced the possibilities of chamber music as a means of bringing people from different backgrounds together.
These experiences — international touring, artistic collaboration and work within the Embassy Series — helped inspire an organization in which cultural exchange is not an occasional theme but part of its foundation.
Jacques-Pierre Malan
JP Malan Concerts was founded and is artistically directed by cellist Jacques-Pierre Malan.
A native of South Africa now based in the Mid-Atlantic United States, he is Cellist-in-Residence and Co-Artistic Director of the Embassy Series in Washington, D.C., has appeared as a member and guest of the Serafin Ensemble and as a touring artist with AMICI Music, and performs in recital and chamber music throughout Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and the District of Columbia.
